Description

In March 2018, I had the opportunity to embark on a tour of Yala National Park in Sri Lanka with esteemed Russian wildlife photographer Andrey Gudkov. Our primary objective for the day was to locate a female leopard and her cubs. Upon hearing several alarm calls from a spotted deer deep within the bush, where the female leopard was known to frequent, we decided to wait near a pathway in hopes of catching a glimpse of her. After nearly an hour of waiting, we were certain that the alarm calls were much closer and indicative of a recent kill. As anticipated, the female leopard emerged from the bush and began walking directly towards us, carrying her kill with the likelihood of returning to her den site where her cubs were located. While I have witnessed leopards dragging their prey across the road, this was my first experience encountering one head on.
